Zahi Hawass In Fight For Antiquities
Jun 6th, 2007 by Lee (admin)
Zahi Hawass, Chief of Antiquities in Egypt, is adamant that he wants key historical pieces back in Egypt where they belong.
On the top of his wish list is a bust of Nefertiti (currently in the Berlin museum) and the Rosetta Stone (in the British museum). he also has many other pieces from around the world in mind too though. He wishes for them to be either loaned or given to Egypt in time for the opening of the Grand Museum, situated next to the Giza pyramids, in 2012.
Whilst other museums have been slow to make official comment, the Berlin museum are steadfast in their resolve to keep Nefertiti’s bust, claiming it is too fragile to move. They have also voiced concerns over whether it would be returned.
Zahi Hawass moved to counter such fears by stating that Egypt were no pirates, however he did add that if the bust was not loaned he would prove it had been stolen and claim it back for good.
